was President of San
Doloroso from 1956 to his death in 1990. Born in
Escote on the Pacific coast, he came
to power in a bloody coup. One of Central America's
longest serving dictators, he was considered a
ruthless and unpredictable figure, but enjoyed much
popular support among the indigenous Escoria
population.
